Research in Groningen

During the congress you are able to get in touch with researchers from the Groningen Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GGS-MS). The GGS-MS encompasses all (research)master and PhD tracks within the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), including the 'Junior Scientific Masterclass', a special track for talented medical students. All research of the UMCG is organized in the Graduate School. The mission of the Graduate School is to train and educate the excellent researchers of the future and to promote excellent research.

Research within the Graduate School ranges from fundamental to patient-oriented (clinical) research and is organized in four Research Institutes:

1. Chronic Diseases and Drug Innovation - GUIDE (director: prof. dr. A.J. Moshage)
The focus of this programme is on the elucidation of (chronic) disease mechanisms, the identification of new targets for intervention and the development and testing of new drugs aimed at these targets. In addition, patient-oriented research is structured in such a way that this leads to new pathophysiological concepts.

2. Biomaterials - W.J. Kolff Institute (director: prof. dr. H.J. Busscher)
The focus of this programme is on injury, repair, intervention and support, bioadhesion, biocompatibility and infection, implants for function restoration, tissue engineering and scaffold materials.

3. The Human Brain - BCN (director: prof. dr. A. Aleman)
The focus of this programme is on brain activity at molecular, cellular and behavioral level. Within the area of behavioral and cognitive neuroscience, physical and mental operations are analyzed from the molecular and cellular level up to the complex level of information processing.

4. Health Research - SHARE (director: prof. dr. R. Sanderman)
The focus in this programme is on the identification of factors related to health, notably healthy ageing. This is achieved by research on determinants and consequences of ageing, incident disease, quality of life, care and cure, as well as by training researchers in the area of health research.

Junior Scientific Masterclass - JSM
The Junior Scientific Masterclass offers an infrastructure for medical students who are interested in doing research. By offering extra courses and research places, students have the opportunity to get an Honours-degree for their research project during the Bachelor programme. They also provide a MD/PhD-programme, in which students can obtain their PhD-degree during their internships. This Masterclass is only for students from Groningen.
