Travelling
Flying to the Netherlands
In the Netherlands we have one major airport near Amsterdam called Schiphol Airport. From there on you can travel to Groningen by train. The railway station is located underneath the Arrival Hall. More information about Schiphol Airport can be found at their website (here).
Arrival at Schiphol Airport
After your arrival at Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam), you have to follow the signs that direct you to the railway station. At the counter, ask for a one-way ticket to Groningen (about 28 euro) and ask when the next intercity-train to Groningen is leaving. The counter is open from 6.30-21.00h. Note that you have to buy a ticket before you enter the train!
The ticket is generally valid at the day of purchase, unless you buy an open-date ticket. If you buy an open-date ticket, make sure you stamp it before entering the train, by using the yellow stamping machines. Otherwise you will have to pay a penalty in the train.
The intercity train from Schiphol to Groningen will take you directly to Groningen. Make sure you get in the right half of the train because the other half will take you to Leeuwarden! Usually, wagons going to Groningen are at the front of the train. You can ask the conductors which wagon will take you to Groningen.
The train leaves at ...:19 and ...:49 every hour. Trains leaving at ..:19 will take you directly to Groningen.Trains leaving at ...:49 aren't go further than Amersfoort, here you will have to switch trains. When you're in Amersfoort, the train to Groningen stops at the other side, but again, make sure you get in the right half of the train to Groningen!
