Anatomy of the heart

Department:      BioMedical Engineering, UMC Groningen
Supervisors:      Prof. G. Rakhorst DVM PhD

The research group developed a Pulsatile Catheter Pump (PUCA pump), a left ventricular assist device that could stabilize patients suffering from cardiogenic shock. During this course participants will dissect a swine heart. Special attention will be paid to the morphology of the coronary artery system and the different heart valves. Working mechanisms of Intra Aortic balloon pumping and mechanical ventricular assist devices will be explained in relation to left ventricular function, aorta, pulmonary artery, atrial and ventricular cannulation.
