Organisation: KNMG-district Groningen
Speakers: dhr. mr. dr. J.H.H.M. Dorscheidt, mw. S. Oosterbaan, mw. R. Gomperts
Termination of pregnancy, or abortion, is a medical procedure that is performed around 46 million times worldwide every year. The world ratio is 26 induced abortions per 100 known pregnancies. About half of these abortions is carried out under legalised conditions and in a medically accepted setting, while the other half occurs under illegal circumstances. Not only the legal approach, but also personal opinions regarding abortion often differ between countries. Furthermore, a person's moral view on the issue can be influenced by his or her professional, religious, cultural, social and personal background.
This workshop on abortion is of special interest for medical students who are interested in expanding their views through learning about the opinion of others. Different policies regarding abortion in different countries (led by a juridical expert) are discussed, as well as a patient's point of view (by a healthcare worker and one of the founders from Women on Waves). By showing different standpoints with regard to abortion, your personal views will be triggered - maybe even challanged - which hopefully leads to an interesting debate among people from various cultures with different backgrounds.
